Heavy Metals in Plant Protein
In 2018, the Clean Label Project released a study showing that many top-selling plant-based protein powders contained elevated levels of heavy metals like lead, arsenic, cadmium, and BPA.
Why Plant Proteins Are Vulnerable
Plants absorb heavy metals from the soil and water they grow in. Since protein powders are highly concentrated extracts of huge volumes of plants (peas, rice, hemp), any trace metals in the soil are also concentrated in the final powder.
Whey protein, being derived from milk, relies on the cow acting as a biological filter, resulting in significantly lower heavy metal concentrations.
Risk vs. Reality
While the presence of heavy metals sounds alarming, context is crucial. The FDA and the EPA have established daily limit thresholds. A single serving of most plant proteins falls well below these limits.
However, if you consume 3-4 scoops of a highly contaminated rice protein daily, you could theoretically approach the limits for arsenic. This is why we advocate for:
- Blended sources: Mixing pea, hemp, and rice reduces the specific heavy metal profile associated with a single crop.
- Third-party testing: We only recommend plant proteins from companies that publish their Certificate of Analysis (CoA) proving their heavy metal levels are safe.
