Isolate vs Concentrate
The supplement industry pushes isolate as the premium choice. But is the extra processing worth the significant price jump?
The Processing Difference
Both start as liquid whey, a byproduct of cheese manufacturing. Whey Concentrate (WPC) goes through microfiltration, yielding a powder that is typically 70-80% protein by weight, with the remainder being lactose (carbs) and milk fat.
Whey Isolate (WPI) undergoes further processing (often cross-flow microfiltration or ion exchange) to strip away almost all the fat and lactose, yielding a powder that is 90% or more protein by weight.
