WHEY VS PLANT PROTEIN

The debate is often clouded by ethical arguments. Here, we strip that away and look purely at the physiology, kinetics, and economics of muscle protein synthesis.

1. Amino Acid Profiles (The Leucine Threshold)

Muscle protein synthesis (MPS) is primarily triggered by the essential amino acid leucine. To maximize MPS, a single meal must contain roughly 2.5g to 3g of leucine.

Whey protein is naturally rich in leucine (approx. 10-11% by weight). A standard 25g dose of whey yields about 2.7g of leucine, crossing the threshold easily.

Plant proteins typically have lower leucine concentrations (6-8%). To hit the same 2.7g threshold, you often need to consume a larger total dose (e.g., 35-40g) of a plant protein blend.

2. Bioavailability & Digestion

The current gold standard for measuring protein quality is the DIAAS (Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Score), replacing the older PDCAAS.

3. The Solution: Blending

A common mistake is relying on a single plant source. Rice protein is low in lysine but high in methionine. Pea protein is high in lysine but low in methionine. Blending them at a 70:30 ratio (Pea:Rice) creates an amino acid profile that closely mimics whey.

When buying a plant protein, always look for a blend rather than a single source, unless it is soy isolate.

Conclusion

If you tolerate dairy, whey concentrate remains the undisputed king of value and bioavailability. If you are vegan or lactose intolerant, a blended plant protein (pea/rice/hemp) is perfectly adequate, provided you consume a slightly larger dose per serving to hit the leucine threshold.
